1. What does El Socorro Maracaturra taste like?
El Socorro Maracaturra is clean, sweet, and beautifully balanced, with notes of chocolate, panela, and juicy yellow plum. Roasted medium, it brings together deep molasses-like sweetness with lively plum acidity and smooth chocolate undertones. The result is comforting and approachable, with a bright, fruit-forward side that keeps every sip interesting.
2. What makes this coffee so special?
This coffee comes from El Socorro, Juan Diego de la Cerda’s renowned Cup of Excellence-winning farm in Guatemala. Maracaturra is one of Juan Diego’s signature varieties, and El Socorro has earned multiple awards and top placements with the exceptional coffees grown there.
What makes this lot so exciting is the balance it achieves: rich sweetness and chocolate meet vibrant fruit and beautiful clarity. It’s complex enough to explore, yet so inviting that you’ll want to keep coming back to it.
3. What is Maracaturra?
Maracaturra is a fascinating hybrid of Maragogype and Caturra. Maragogype is famous for its unusually large trees, cherries, and seeds—as well as excellent cup quality—while Caturra is a more compact variety.
Together, they create a variety with plenty of personality. At El Socorro, Maracaturra produces a cup with wonderful sweetness, structure, and fruit character. If you’ve tried El Socorro Pacamara, this is a beautiful opportunity to experience another of Juan Diego’s signature varieties and discover how differently each one expresses the same remarkable place.
4. Where does El Socorro Maracaturra come from, and how is it processed?
This coffee comes from El Socorro Farm in Palencia, Guatemala, where producer Juan Diego de la Cerda grows Maracaturra at 1,750–1,850 meters above sea level.
It is fully washed, helping create the clean, defined character that lets its molasses sweetness, plum-like acidity, and chocolate undertones shine. It’s a beautiful example of what happens when a distinctive variety, exceptional growing conditions, and meticulous processing come together.
5. What’s the best way to brew El Socorro Maracaturra?
With its balance of chocolate, panela sweetness, and juicy yellow plum, this coffee gives you plenty to explore. We recommend brewing it as pour over, drip, AeroPress, or frech press.
We especially love it as a pour over, where its plum-like brightness and layered sweetness can really open up. For a rounder, fuller cup, try a french press and let its chocolate and molasses-like character take center stage. However you brew it, give the cup a little time to cool—you may be surprised by how much more this Maracaturra has to share.
